PICTORIAL FAMILY TREE (PFT) INSTRUCTIONS 1. PICTORIAL FAMILY TREE LAYOUT: Let me first describe the PICTORIAL FAMILY TREE (PFT) FOLDER/FILE layout. The PFT folder is the overall folder containing a subfolder for each family member. Within each member subfolder, ie, member folder, there are two subfolders, one for storing pictures and one for storing documents. Each family member folder is prefixed with a 3-digit sequence number to place that member wihtin a hierarchical genealogical sequence. Members in the same generation are prefixed with the same 3-digit number. The smaller the numerical prefix, the farther back in time that the member lived. I chose my own generation as 100 to allow more room for older members. In addition to the pictures and documents subfolders, each member folder contain a headshot picture & an HTML file which "links" to the other member folders of immediately related family members. 2. ADDING A MEMBER FOLDER: To add a member o the PFT, all you need do is to create a new member folder and load it with the data required. To accomplish this task I have included a member folder template herein, 000-MEMBER-FOLDER-TEMPLATE. For backup purposes, copy and paste this folder somewhere outside of the PFT folder, because you will need for adding more than one member. Having done that, let's get to work. 3. ADDING FILES TO THE 000-MEMBER-FOLDER-TEMPLATE. The first thing you will want to add is the person's headshot. Copy the .jpg picture of the person you want and paste it into the member's folder. Delete the template called HeadShot.jpg and rename the person's picture to HeadShot.jpg. Copy and paste any other pictures and documents to the Pictures and Documents subfolders, respectively. 4. MAKE CHANGES TO THE MEMBER HTML FILE CALLED MemberFacts.html: And now comes the part you may choke on, ie, updating the member's HTML FILE. The html file tells your browser how to paint a a member's screen as well as where to go to find immediately related family members, ie, links. The html file must have the file-type .html when used by a browser. Included in the member folder template, you will see a file called MemberFacts.html. You must use a text editor, like Windows NotePad, to update this file. When you first open the file with your text editor, you will see two types of happy faces, one smiling followed by one with sun glasses. These mark respectively the beginning and end of each data field where you have to enter information for your new member. In between the two similey faces is the indicaton of what is required. After entering the text into each data fueld, MAK SURE YOU DELETE THE TWO SMILEY FACES LEAVING NO SPACES. The following is important to understand in text editing the file. DO NOT CHANGE ANY LINES CONTAINING LONG STRINGS OF &nsb, BECAUSE THOSE ARE SPACES USED FOR FORMATTING. AND DO NOT REMOVE ANY
LINES, BECAUSE THOSE ARE LINE FEEDS (ie, CARRIAGE RETURNS). WITHOUT THESE CONTROL CHARACTERS YOU WILL GET LINE WRAPS. (NOTE: Do not allow the addition of any ACTIVEX or SCRIPTS into the html file.) Finally after making your changes, MAKE SURE YOU SAVE MemberFacts.html WITHOUT CHANGING THE FILE-NAME & FILE-TYPE. 5. ACTIVATING THE MEMBER FOLDER. Having completed updating the new member folder, it is now time to rename it to the appropriate numerical generation prefix and person's name. You now have the new member's folder established and ready to respond to links from other existing member folders. 6. TEST USING YOUR BROWSER. 7. THE 002-GROUP FOLDER. This folder is intended to keep sub-folders which in turn contain related group shots where there are far too many members to create an individual member folder for each peson shown. If an individual member appears in a group shot, then that fact can be updated in the WHERE SEEN links of the individual member.
